Xiong named the 2018 Fred Haskins Award Winner

AJGA alum Norman Xiong won the 2018 Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel. The award honors the most outstanding male collegiate golfer in the United States, voted by peers, coaches and golf media.

The award was named after Fred Haskins, who was a head professional at the Country Club of Columbus for 34 years. Haskins was a mentor to many young amateurs and devoted his time in teaching them about the game and helping them advance to the next level.

Xiong is a three-time Rolex Junior All-American and earned five AJGA victories. In addition to his wins, Xiong posted a 3-1-0 record as a member of the 2015 Wyndham Cup West Team.

As the first player from the University of Oregon to receive this award, Xiong is coming off the greatest individual season in Oregon’s history. Winning six times and averaging 69.05, the sophomore scored over par in only seven rounds the entire season. By winning this prestigious award, Xiong earns an exemption into the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic, July 5-8.

The top-ten players on the Haskins Awards Watch List were AJGA alumni.

Justin Suh of the University of Southern California and Doug Ghim of the University of Texas were two of the top-three contenders to receive the award. Suh earned an AJGA victory at the 2013 AJGA Junior at Ruby Hill. Ghim was a four-time Rolex Junior All-American and four-time AJGA champion. These two players combine for a total of eight collegiate victories in the 2017-2018 season.
