Champions Report: June 30

Ten champions joined the AJGA winner’s circle after five tournaments in five states.

AJGA Junior at Centennial – The AJGA Junior at Centennial saw two wire-to-wire winners claim their first AJGA titles on June 29. Kayla Kozak of Bluffton, South Carolina, entered the final round T1 with Kiana Oshiro of Central Point, Oregon, but separated herself with a par on No. 18. The University of Central Florida commit carded three birdies and an eagle in the final round to finish with a score of 6-under-par 210. Trey Davis of Plumas Lake, California, recorded 18 birdies in the event, including six in the final round. He also was bogey-free on the front nine. Davis finished six strokes ahead of the field at 15-under-par 201.

Windham Mountain Resort Junior All-Star – A 15-year-old claimed the title in both the Boys and Girls Divisions at the Windham Mountain Resort Junior All-Star in Windham, New York. Phoebe Brinker of Wilmington, Delaware, defended her 2016 Windham Mountain Resort Junior All-Star title by firing four birdies in the final round to become the wire-to-wire winner at 4-under-par 212. Brinker has finished top-10 in all three of her 2017 events. For Drue Nicholas of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, the Windham Mountain Resort Junior All-Star served as his inaugural AJGA event. Nicholas’s low final round score of 5-under-par 67, including four birdies in five holes on the back nine, put him at the top of the leaderboard at 9-under-par 207 for the win.

AJGA Kansas Junior at Buffalo Dunes – Tyler Severin of Johnstown, Colorado, played his first-ever AJGA event and took home the title. The 17-year-old carded an even-par 72 final-round to finish with a tournament total 1-under-par 215. Elle Nachmann of Boca Raton, Florida won her third AJGA title by recording an even-par 72 final-round to finish at 5-over-par 221. The 14-year-old previously won the 2016 Amino VITAL® / Joey D Golf Junior Championship and the 2016 Lockton Kansas City Junior.

St. Francisville Area Foundation Junior at The Bluffs – The St. Francisville Area Foundation Junior at the Bluffs was held at the Bluffs on Thompson Creek in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Due to inclement weather, the final round was switched to a stipulated nine-hole round with the Boys Division competing on the front nine, and the Girls Division on the back nine. Alden Wallace of Shreveport, Louisiana, claimed her first AJGA title after carding a low final-round 1-under-par 35. The 17-year-old LSU verbal commit carded 12 birdies to finish at 1-under-par 179. Massimo Mbetse of Cape Town, South Africa, claimed the Boys Division title at even-par 180. The 17-year-old recorded a birdie on the final hole to force a sudden-death playoff with Nicholas Arcement of Thibodaux, Louisiana. Mbetse then birdied No. 9 again in the playoff to earn the victory.

Polo Golf Junior Classic – Youngin Chun of Gainesville, Florida, won the Girls Division of the prestigious Polo Golf Junior Classic at The Ridge at Back Brook in Ringoes, New Jersey. The 17-year-old three-time Rolex Junior All-American carded 15 birdies over four rounds to finish at 3-under-par 285. In the Boys Division, Karl Vilips of (Australia) Wesley Chapel, Florida, was the wire-to-wire winner and claimed his fifth national junior golf tournament title. After finishing the first round T1 with Jacob Bridgeman of Inman, South Carolina, the Stanford University verbal commit recorded 14 birdies in the next three rounds to solidify his spot at the top of the leaderboard. Vilips finished with a tournament-total 8-under-par 280.
