McBride Takes Lead in Boys Division After Second Round at Steelwood Country Club

Weather delay keeps Girls Division from finishing second-round play in AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T

LOXLEY, Ala.  Jake McBride, of Hartville, Ohio, finished the second round of the AJGA Junior at Steewood presented by AT&T at the top of the Boys Division with a 1-under-par 71 bringing his tournament total to 3-under-par 141. Due to a four hour weather delay, the Girls Division was unable to finish the second round and will continue play Thursday.

The AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T is a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala. The tournament field consists of 72 boys and 24 girls. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,995 yards and the Girls Division is playing at 5,932 yards.

After playing a solid round on Tuesday, McBride kept the same strategy in order to maintain his position within the Boys Division and finished the round with the lead. He struggled at the beginning, but was able to turn it around on No. 7.

Everyone else seemed to have some difficulty [on No. 7] but for some reason I hit a pretty good 9-iron shot and then putted in for a birdie, McBride said. That turned things around for me and put me in a good spot for the rest of the day.

Hank Lebioda of Winter Springs, Fla., sits in a close second with a 5-under par 67 second round score, bringing him to 2-under-par 142. Benjamin Wood of Florence, Ala., and Justin Cho of Norcross, Ga., tied in third with a 1-under-par 143. Robby Shelton, IV of Wilmer, Ala., is in fifth place with a 1-over-par 145.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park and Morgan Pressel.

The Girls Division will resume play on Thursday with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start. The final round will begin with a 10:30 a.m. shotgun for both Boys and Girls Divisions.
