ANTHONY KIM AND JANE LEE STEP UP,
TAKE CHAMPIONSHIP
Matching final-round 69's give Kim and Lee first
2001 AJGA victories
TEMPE, Ariz. - Anthony Kim of La Quinta, Calif., and Jane Lee of Torrance, Calif., both secured victory in their respective divisions Sunday at the AJGA PING Phoenix Junior Championship. Kim's 3-under-par 69 propelled him into first place past Jeff Lanier of Austin, Texas, who started the day with a two-shot lead. In the Girls Division, Lee, who started three back, also surged from behind, carding a final-round 69 to finish ahead of second-round leader Allison Martin of Bakersfield, Calif.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA PING Phoenix Junior Championship featured a field of 85 junior golfers, ages 13-18, representing 13 states and included 10 players from Arizona. Included in this week's field at the Karsten Golf Course at ASU were seven Polo Golf Junior All-Americans. Past winners of this event include Tiger Woods, Emilee Klein, Grace Park and Heather Bowie.
Kim battled poor putting throughout the day. But Kim, who won the Junior World Championship and placed second at the AJGA Thunderbird International Junior and the AJGA Lucent Technologies Boys Junior Championship earlier in the year, sunk a clutch par-saving putt on No. 17 that finally gave him the outright lead he would not relinquish. Kim finished the tournament with a 209 three-day total.
"There are so many pressures in the final round," Kim said, thinking he would need to get to 10-under-par for the tournament in order to win. "It just feels awesome, especially against such great competition."
Spencer Levin of Elk Grove, Calif., started the day four back but paced Kim with a 69 to place him second at 210. Pansing Singhaseni of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Joshua Wooding of Riverside, Calif., finished third at 211. Kevin Larsen of Santa Barbara, Calif., came in with a 5-under-par 67 to take sole possession of the fifth spot. Lanier, the first-and second-round leader, slipped to sixth with a 1-over-par 73.
In the Girls Division, Lee also had to make a strong move in order to claim victory. After back-to-back bogeys on the front nine, she was ready to give up. Starting the back nine 5-under-par through five, including a hole-in-one on the 150-yard, par 3 12th, changed things in a hurry.
"I wasn't sure if I could do it. It was like I was playing for second," she said. "It feels really good knowing that I could fight through that. I feel like my mental game got stronger. I learned never to give up."
Lee has been flirting with victory all summer. After placing second at the AJGA Marsh Kansas City Junior and the AJGA Arizona Classic, this win was long overdue, she said.
"I had the feeling I could win, but I've been losing that feeling the final round the past couple tournaments," she said. "Now I feel that I can stay strong and win all the time."
Joining Lee in the top three Girls Division places were Martin at 215 and Charlotte Mayorkas of Chula Vista, Calif., and Hanna Jun of San Diego, Calif., at 218.
