Conway Farms Set
to Host 13th Annual Canon Cup
Nations best set to battle in East vs. West showdown
BRASELTON, Ga. The American
Junior Golf Association will conduct the 13th annual Canon
Cup at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill., on August
5 - 8. Forty of the countrys best juniors will be on
hand to compete in one of the most popular events on the AJGA
slate.
The competition pits East vs. West (divided by the Mississippi
River) in a match play format similar to the Ryder Cup. Teams
(10 boys and 10 girls) were selected based on a point system
and include four captains picks per squad. The first
two days of competition will include several types of four-player
matches before singles matches cap the event on the final
day.
The West squad will look to retain the title and improve its
4-7-1 record against the East. The West team won two of the
first three Canon Cups before the East ran off six straight
wins during the mid 1990s. Past Canon Cup participants include
Tiger Woods, Stewart Cink, David Gossett, Charles Howell,
Ty Tryon, Beth Bauer, Kelli Kuehne, and Grace Park.
Participating in the Canon Cup is a highlight of any
junior career, said Mark Oskarson, AJGA Director of
Tournament Operations and Canon Cup Tournament Director. Its
a fun week for the juniors to get to know the other players
better, and the quality of golf is second-to-none.
Twelve of the top-15 boys in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance
Index and 13 of the top-15 girls are slated to compete at
Canon Cup, including top-ranked players James Vargas of Miami
and Brittany Lang of McKinney, Texas. Other noteworthy participants
include 2002 U.S. Womens Open competitors Nicole Hage
(Coral Springs, Fla.) and Elizabeth Janangelo (West Hartford,
Conn.). Morgan Pressel of Boca Raton, Fla., who made national
headlines after qualifying for the 2001 U.S. Womens
Open, will represent the East in her first Canon Cup.
Canon U.S.A., Inc., sponsor of the event since the inaugural
edition in 1990, is an industry leader in professional and
consumer imaging systems and solutions and, through its parent
company, Canon Inc. of Japan (NYSE:CAJ), is a top patent holder
of imaging technologies. The companys comprehensive
product line includes networked multifunction devices; digital
and analog copiers (color and black and white); printers,
scanners, facsimile machines; camcorders, cameras and lenses;
semiconductors, broadcast and medical equipment.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization dedicated to the overall growth and development
of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships
through competitive junior golf.
The largest Association of its kind, the AJGA has a membership
(boys and girls ages 13-18) of more than 5,500 golfers from
50 states and 30 countries. More than 140 former AJGA members
currently play on the PGA and LPGA Tours and have more than
240 Tour victories to their credit.
