AJGA’s
First Tournament in Utah Starts Off on Right Foot
Glenwild Golf Club and Spa—Utah’s
No. 1 golf course—to play host to AJGA event
Located
in the Rocky Mountains outside of Park City, Utah, Glenwild
Golf Club & Spa is a wonderful addition to the list of
outstanding venues the American Junior Golf Association has
inked in on its 2004 schedule. Not only will the AJGA run
the inagural AJGA Glenwild Junior at this outstanding facility—the
state’s No. 1 course—but it is also the first
time the Beehive State has been included on the Association’s
tournament schedule in its 26-year history.
The tournament will feature a field of 84-top junior boys
and girls ages 12-18 from around the country. With the AJGA
Glenwild Junior being the first event the AJGA has hosted
in the state of Utah, Tournament Director Derrick Farnham
hopes to bring the state nothing but the best that Utah has
seen for junior golf.
“Bringing an AJGA tournament to this area of the country
is great for junior golf,” Farnham said. “The
western region of the United States has some of the top juniors
in the country, and I think Glenwild will really give them
a challenge.”
Glenwild Golf Club & Spa Quick Facts Location:
Park City, Utah |
Glenwild
was built in August 2001, but due to Utah’s severe weather
conditions, the course has been open for play for only 15
months.
“We are very excited to team up with the AJGA,”
Glenwild head professional, Mark Aulrich said. “It’s
nice to see a national golf event come to the Park City area.”
The venue is located on a 900-acre property development area
situated in a mountain environment amongst wild flowers and
9,000 freshly planted trees. Considering course designer Tom
Fazio has produced almost 20 percent of Golfweek Magazines
current list of America’s Best 100 Modern courses, it
is no surprise that Glenwild was ranked by Golf Digest as
the No. 1 course in Utah.
“Glenwild is an extremely challenging but fun course,”
Aulrich said. “A par-71, 7,600 yard course appears to
be a lot of golf, but players should also remember Glenwild
is 6,600 feet above sea level.”
Therefore a player’s drive off the tee will carry far,
which will make for an exciting tournament. A waterfall, winding
stream and a series of lakes will provide another set of challenges
for the junior golfers. With these obstacles, it is no wonder
why Glenwild has an intimidating course slope and rating of
75.7 and 186, respectively.
“The finishing holes are the strongest consecutive holes
on the course,” Aulrich said. “It will be fun
to see how the juniors fair not only on the course as a whole,
but also on the final two holes.”
The par-4, 456-yard No. 18 begins with a scenic tee shot looking
out at the Wasatch Range. On the left side of the fairway
is a lake that extends from the start of the fairway to the
green with the right side having two bunkers and numerous
trees.
Park City is not only well known for its fabulous winter sports
and beautiful golf courses, but also for its open-air activities.
Nearly five miles from Glenwild, families can find activities
such as hiking through the Wasatch Range or a mountain bike
trail that takes you through fields of wildflowers and a beautiful
view of Park City. Historic downtown Park City features specialty
shops and restaurants along with many health clubs and spas.
