AJGA Juniors Qualify for U.S. Women’s Open

Alexis Thompson made headlines in 2007 when she became the youngest player to ever qualify for the U.S. Women's Open.

Ten current AJGA members are scheduled to compete in the upcoming U.S. Women’s Open, the AJGA reported Tuesday. Nine of the 10 players earned spots in the 156-player field via sectional qualifying Monday for this USGA Championship, which will be played June 26-29 at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn. Six of these players will also be competing in this week’s Rolex Girls Junior Championship at Carmel Country Club in Charlotte.
 
Kimberly Kim of Pahoa, Hawaii, 16 years old, was one of 74 players fully exempted into the U.S. Women’s Open. Kim became the youngest U.S. Women's Amateur Champion ever in 2006 as a 14-year-old. She will be competing in her second consecutive Women’s Open after missing the cut in 2007 with a 78-74 performance at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Pinehurst, N.C. A member of the recently victorious U.S. Curtis Cup Team at the Old Course at St. Andrews, Kim is headlining the Rolex Girls Junior Championship as the No. 1-ranked junior in the Polo Golf Rankings
 
Sarah Almond of Albemarle, N.C., Courtney Ellenbogen of Blacksburg, Va., Jessica Korda of Bradenton, Fla., Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash., Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights, Calif., Kristen Park of Buena Park, Calif., Jenny Shin of Torrance, Calif., Victoria Tanco, also of Bradenton, Fla., and Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., were the nine who played their way in to the U.S. Women’s Open Monday.
