After a visit to the Webb Simpson Junior Championship in Clemmons, N.C., earlier in the week, where he competed in a putting challenge and interacted with many of the juniors, the tournament host and AJGA alum made the 40-minute drive to Sedgefield Country Club to compete in the PGA TOUR’s Wyndham Championship.
The four-time Rolex Junior All-American posted sub-70 scores in all four rounds of the Wyndham Championship en route to 18-under-par 262. The victory was the first on TOUR for the Raleigh native and he now sits at third in the FedExCup standings. His 2011 season ends after seven additional top-10 performances, and the win propelled him to third on the money list.
Not a bad week for the former AJGA standout as he will look to continue his success in the playoffs.
This is the second year that Simpson has hosted an AJGA event in his home state, making an appearance at both tournaments. During his AJGA career, Simpson competed in the AJGA’s Greensboro event six times with his best finish (T2) coming at the 2002 Chrysler AJGA Boys Invitational. He went on to play collegiate golf at Wake Forest, where he was a three-time All-American and the ACC Player of the Year in 2008.
