AJGA alumni had a strong showing on the PGA, LPGA, and Nationwide
Tours this weekend as Jason Dufner, Azahara Munoz, and Nick Flanagan won
tournaments.
Jason Dufner secured
his second PGA victory at the Byron Nelson Championship in Irving, Texas, on
Sunday. Dufner birdied the final hole to avoid going to a playoff, having
already claimed a victory at the Zurich Classic in a playoff against Ernie Els.
Dufner’s AJGA career included five tournaments in 1994
and 1995.
At the Sybase Match Play Championship, Azahara Munoz defeated 1999 Rolex Junior Player of the Year Candie Kung, 2 and 1, in the
championship match. Munoz competed in the Thunderbird International Junior twice,
finished sixth in 2004 and second in 2005. After graduating from Arizona State
in 2009, Munoz turned pro and was named 2010 LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year.
Seven of the eight quarterfinalists were AJGA alumni, including four
Rolex Junior Players of the Year: Candie Kung; Julieta Granada (2004); Morgan
Pressel (2005); and Vicky Hurst (2007).
Stacy Lewis and Anna Nordqvist round
out the list AJGA alumni in the quarterfinals.
For Nick Flanagan, his
win at the BMW Pro-Am was the first of the year. If he can maintain his current
position on the money list, Flanagan stands a chance at moving to the PGA TOUR
in 2013. Flanagan finished T11 at Thunderbird International Junior in 2002.
