Matt Borocz, assistant general manager and director of golf at TPC Sawgrass in Ponta Vedra Beach, Florida, was named the 2014 Golf Professional of the Year by the American Junior Golf Association. The Golf Professional Award honors a PGA professional whose selfless commitment makes the championship special for the players, families and staff.

Each year, the AJGA presents awards to the tournaments with the best individual hospitality, Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament, charitable giving and volunteer base. Awards are also given to the events with the highest media and social media participation. Finally, the AJGA recognizes the year’s most outstanding golf professional, superintendent and general manager, as well as the most improved event, best new event, best Junior All-Star tournament, best Invitational and overall tournament of the year. Tournament awards for the 2014 season will be presented on-site at the 2015 tournament.

“To have this honor as Golf Professional of the Year is very special and it’s something I will look back on in my career and I will be very appreciative,” Borocz said. “I know you all only go to the best clubs in the country and beyond and this is a great honor.”

Borocz has been a vital part of the success of The Junior PLAYERS Championship presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf since its inception in 2007. Serving as a main point of contact for the AJGA and its staff, Borocz ensures each piece of the puzzle at TPC is in perfect order, striving to give the players an incredible experience.

“The most important thing was the vision from Billy Detalff, Bill Hughes and the PGA TOUR to create a very special golf tournament for juniors that mirrors THE PLAYERS Championship,” Borocz said. “The goal was to create something very special and inspire them to play in the future at THE PLAYERS Championship. And, it’s been so fun to welcome these guys back to the course when they make it as professionals.”

The Junior PLAYERS Championship crowned its first champion in Morgan Hoffmann in 2007 and has since seen champions in players such as Bobby Wyatt, Gavin Hall, Robby Shelton IV, and most recently Sam Horsfield. As the original vision has come full circle, former junior golfers from around the world have earned invitations to THE PLAYERS Championship as professionals and re-experienced TPC Sawgrass.

TPC Sawgrass opens its doors to the AJGA and 78 of the world’s top junior boys for a week-long event each fall. Borocz said the staff thrives on the excitement and energy the event and players bring to the club and calls it a favorite for everyone each year.

“When you meet the young men for the first time, their excitement and to see it through their eyes and watch them walk the locker room and take their families through the club and see how special it is for them is just very cool,” Borocz said. “Not only for our kids form the United States, but also for those international players – they’re all just so over the top excited and to see them at the end of the week when they’ve just truly enjoyed everything is very special and I love being a part of it.”

Borocz and his staff welcome back the AJGA in September 2015 for the ninth Junior PLAYERS Championship presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf.
