In 2012, the AJGA implemented a special initiative to address the safety concerns of much hotter temperatures and dehydration called Operation Hydration. On-site at each event, the AJGA provides:
Abundant bottled water & sports drink The AJGA provides parents, volunteers, players and staff with bottled water and sports drink options around the course. Water is handed out before the event in the players meeting and its consumption is encouraged before, during and after play.
Available carbohydrates Fruit, nutrition bars and electrolyte drinks or powder are available on starting holes, at the turn, in cooling stations and items are carried by AJGA staff members in kits on each golf cart. Players, parents and staff are encouraged to eat regularly.
Cooling stations with iced towels Tents with shade, chairs, water, fruit and iced towels are available in at least 1-2 places on the golf course for parents, spectators and players to utilize. Iced towels are generally available when temperatures exceed the regional norm, or 90 degrees.
Certified athletic trainer or medical professional All AJGA events are required to have an on-site certified medical staff member who can properly care for any medical issues and evaluate anyone who might need help immediately.
The AJGA has designed a Care for the Course program to educate juniors on proper golf course maintenance. The purpose of the campaign is to educate young men and women about best practices while on the golf course to ensure America’s golf courses stay beautiful.
At each event, AJGA juniors carry small sand refilling bottles to immediately fix divots during play. After play, juniors often gather for Care for the Course parties where parents, players and AJGA staff take care of practice facilities by sand-filling divots or fixing ballmarks on greens. Participation in the Care for the Course initiative is included in the AJGA’s code of conduct policy and juniors give back more than 100 hours each year to care for golf courses.
