AJGA CLUBCORP JUNIOR PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP
The Homestead Resort, Lower Cascades Course
Hot Springs, Virginia
July 30-August 2, 2001
TWO FIRST-TIMERS WIN CLUBCORP JUNIOR
PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP
Peffley runs away with Boys Division; Myers hangs
on in Girls Division
HOT SPRINGS, Va.-- Blaine Peffley appeared to be just feeling the waters in the first round of the AJGA ClubCorp Junior Players Championship, then ran away from the field in the final two rounds to claim his first AJGA title with a three-day total of 6-under-par 210. Whitney Myers of East Berlin, Pa., drained a 6-foot par putt on the 18th hole to hang on for a one-shot victory in the Girls Division.
The ClubCorp Junior Players Championship, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, was played at the tradition-rich Homestead Resort and featured 120 players from 20 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada. Included in the field were 20 players from Virginia.
Peffley carded a 1-under-par 71 in the final round to cruise to his first AJGA title. After sharing the lead with four other players at 71 in the first round, Peffley fired a 4-under-par 68 in the second round. Coming in the final round with a five-shot lead, Peffley didn't want to change a thing.
"I came into the round, trying to forget that I had a five-shot lead," Peffley said. "I wanted to be a competitor and play the way I am capable of playing."
Peffley recorded seven birdies and seven pars en route to his 1-under-par final round. The 17-year-old was 3-under-par through his first three holes and made the turn in 33.
"I was playing well through the front nine," the Lebanon, Pa., native said. "I got into trouble on the back and I started to get a little worried."
Peffley may have been a bit more worried than most players. He finished second in the AJGA Sand Barrens Junior Championship, but held a three-shot lead with nine holes to play. He learned from that experience this week.
"It feels pretty good to get a win after what happened at Sand Barrens," Peffley added. "I wasn't going to let it happen here."
Finishing four shots back was Brant Stovall of Lawsonville, N.C., on rounds of 74-71-69--214. Hunter Bendall of Richmond, Va., placed third with a three-day total of 77-72-67--216. David Dankmyer of Gibsonia, Pa., and Garrett Pike of Sterling, Va., tied for fifth at 1-over-par 217.
In the Girls Division, Whitney Myers' crucial putt on No. 18 clinched her first AJGA victory.
Myers watched as Katie Miller of Jeannette, Pa., nearly holed a birdie chip from off the green on the final hole, then calmly stepped up and drained a bending 6-footer for the victory. After the round, Myers didn't know she needed that putt to win as Miller finished one shot back.
"I didn't realize that if I had missed that putt, we'd be in a playoff," Myers said. "I really needed that putt just for my confidence."
Myers struggled after firing rounds of 76-74 in the first two rounds. She held a 4-shot advantage over Miller, but had to sweat it out in the end. Nonetheless, the 15-year-old was pleased to get her first AJGA victory.
"It feels pretty good to get a win, especially with the way I had been playing," Myers said. "Everything was a struggle today. I was very inconsistent. I would have one good hole, but then play a bad one."
Myers, however, rode her play in the first two rounds to win her first AJGA title.
"I was very pleased with the way I played the first two rounds," Myers added. "It put me in a position to get the win, and this gives me a lot of confidence heading into fall tournaments."
Miller was one shot back at 232 on rounds of 78-76-78. Erica Battle of Columbia, S.C., was third with a three-day total of 237 on rounds of 76-79-83.
