WOYAK, JONES TAKE MEDALIST HONORS AT ENGLISH TURN QUALIFIER
16 boys, 2 girls fill tournament field

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Jason Woyak of Pace, Fla., and Katherine Jones of Jackson, Miss., grabbed medalist honors Monday in their respective divisions at the AJGA Compaq Junior Classic at English Turn Qualifier.

The 18-hole event, part of the Pepsi Qualifier Series presented by ClubCorp, was conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at English Turn Golf & Country Club and featured 83 players representing 11 states and El Salvador.

Woyak carded four birdies en route to a round of 36-36--70, qualifying for his first-ever AJGA tournament. Woyak, who started on No. 7, made the turn at 1-under-par 34 after a birdie on No. 9 before playing the back nine in even-par fashion. After back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17, Woyak regrouped with a par on No. 18.

"The wheels started coming off after Nos. 16 and 17," Woyak said. "But my par on the long par-4 18th hole was really key. I was able to keep it going after that.

"I was really hitting my driver well today and it feels great to qualify for my first AJGA tournament."

Blake Trimble of Houston, Texas, and Drew Laning of Little Rock, Ark., finished one shot back at 1-under-par 71 while Brock McDowell of League City, Texas, and Jeff Osborn of Glendale, Calif., came in at even-par 72.

In the Girls Division, Jones qualified for her second AJGA event with a 3-over-par 75. The 15-year-old made the turn at 4-over-par 40 before playing the back at 1-under-par with a birdie on the par-5 480-yard 15th hole.

"I missed a lot of greens on the front but the key was getting up-and-down all day," said Jones who had 14 pars in her round. "I really have to hit more greens this week, but if I can get up-and-down like I did today, I should be in good shape."

Jones will look for her second victory in three weeks after winning the Mississippi Junior State Amateur two weeks ago.

Jennifer Pandolfi of Navarre, Fla., finished a stroke back at 38-38--76 to fill the remaining girls spot.

The 54-hole event begins Wednesday with tee times running from 7:30-9:27 a.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at the English Turn Golf & Country Club.
