BEERS GRABS FIRST AJGA VICTORY IN
GREENSBORO
Castro holds on to take second AJGA victory by three
shots
GREENSBORO, N.C.-Jackie Beers of Midlothian, Va., took her first AJGA victory after firing a final-round 76 at the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Junior on Thursday. Roberto Castro of Alpharetta, Ga., posted a final round 71 to take the Boys Division title.
The 54-hole tournament, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the Cardinal Golf & Country Club, featured 102 players representing 18 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada, including 36 North Carolina natives.
The 17-year-old Beers was able to get up-and-down for
par coming down the stretch to preserve her lead. She
even saved par from the back, right chipping area to
complete the one shot victory with a total of 76-72-76--224.
"I started okay, today, but I got sour in the middle
of the round," Beers said. "I was glad to
come back at the end."
Beers took fourth place at the AJGA Thunderbird International Junior in Pheonix last month and will be playing at the AJGA Hargray Junior Classic at Indigo Run at Hilton Head Island, S.C. in two weeks.
"I only hit five greens today. It was difficult to judge the distances on my approach shots because of the windy conditions."
Kelly Froelich of Wesley Chapel, Fla., shot the lowest final round in the Girls Division to finish in second place at 75-77-73--225. Andrea Vander Lende of Longwood, Fla., finished three shots back in third place with a total of 74-78-75--227.
The 15-year-old Castro birdied the first two holes to start the day, but made four bogeys on the front for a 2-over-par 37. Castro needed some luck and a lot of skill on the back nine to claim his victory. After pull-hooking his drive into a hazard on No. 14, Castro took a drop, smashed a 190-yard 4-iron over the trees to 30 feet and drained the putt to save a par.
"I've played well the last couple weeks," Castro said. "I thought the scores would be a little higher this week, and this course sets up well for me because you have to hit it straight here."
Castro finished in sixth place at the Thunderbird International Junior last month and won the AJGA Henry-Griffitts Rome Junior Classic last year. He will play in the AJGA Justin Leonard/Deloitte & Touche Junior Team event next week in Dallas, Texas.
Brad Tilley of Chappaqua, N.Y., finished three shots back in second place with a total of 74-72-69--215. In third place was Brendon Todd of Cary, N.C., with a total of 74-72-70--216. Kyle Metzler (70-74-73--217) of Rancho Murieta, Calif., finished five shots back in fourth place. Rounding out the fop-five was Ryan Sypniewski of Radford, Va., with a total of 73-76-69--218.
In other action, Dustin Johnson of Chapin, S.C., made five birdies and two bogeys in the final round to shoot a new 18-hole tournament record round of 3-under-par 67.
