KEENEY'S CLUTCH PAR SECURES BOYS
DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP
Martin Comes From Behind to Take Girls Division Title
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Ryan Keeney of Redmond, Wash., had a look of total relief as his two-foot par putt dropped on the final hole of the AJGA ClubCorp Junior at Mission Hills. His 2-under-par, final-round 70 was just enough to thwart hard-charging defending champion Kevin Na of Diamond Bar, Calif., and take home the Boys Division title. Allison Martin of Bakersfield, Calif., fired the only under-par round of the day in the Girls Division to come from six shots back and claim the title.
The AJGA ClubCorp Junior at Mission Hills, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, featured 84 of the nation's top junior golfers ages 13-18. In its 20th year, the 54-hole tournament included 17 Polo Golf Junior All-Americans. Ten states and Scotland were also represented in this week's field. Past winners include names such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Bob May, Grace Park, Kellee Booth and Emilee Klein.
This was Keeney's second straight week of being the leader when he stepped to the No. 18 tee during the final round at an AJGA event. Last week, at the AJGA Las Vegas Founders' Legacy Junior, Keeney did not know where he stood and settled for a par. His par put him in a tie with Pat Moore of Phoenix, which he then lost on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. He learned his lesson last week and asked what he needed to keep his lead.
"I didn't want to think about last week," Keeney said. "But I'm glad I asked because I didn't want any doubt in my mind. To feel like you've won and then not is hard to take. I feel like I've gotten my revenge."
Keeney attributed his wire-to-wire victory to his confidence in his game. He has now strung together five-straight under-par AJGA tournament rounds.
"Every shot I hit I feel like it's going right at the hole and every putt is going to drop," Keener said of his 67-70-70--207 tournament total. "It seemed like my only mistake came when I got a few bad bounces."
Na missed a 10-foot putt that would have placed him in a tie with Keeney. His 70-69-69--208 tournament total placed him in second. Jay Choi of Buena Park, Calif., and Kyle Gentry of Carmel, Calif., followed in a tie for third at 210 and Henry Liaw of Rowland Heights, Calif., finished at 211 rounding out the top five.
Liaw carded the Boys Division 18-hole, final-round and tournament low score with a 34-31--65.
In the Girls Division, Martin, with a tournament total 72-75-69--217, came from six shots back to take the championship away from first- and second-round leader Erica Blasberg of Corona, Calif. By winning the AJGA Ashworth Junior Classic at Quail Ranch, Martin's victory at Mission Hills gives her two AJGA wins in 2001. She took home the maximum amount of tournament hardware by winning the Qualifier Medalist award, low final-round score award and tournament champion award.
"Right off the first tee I kept telling myself to swing aggressive," Martin said. "My game went to a new level. My game plan let me get focused, find a target and hit that target. I got my game to a new level and I'm glad I gave it my best."
Blasberg placed second with a 70-71-76--217 tournament total. Last year's champion, Ina Kim, placed third with a 72-72-74--218 total.
