MILLER SHOOTS 75 TO HANG ON TO LEAD AT THE PINES
Schmucker claims lead in Girls Division

NISSWA, Minn. - Zack Miller of San Rafael, Calif., carded a 3-over-par 75 Wednesday to hold on to his first-round lead at the AJGA Compaq Junior Classic at the Pines. Amy Schmucker of Cold Spring, Minn., fired a 7-over-par 79 to jump into the lead in the Girls Division.

In its fifth year, the American Junior Golf Association's Compaq Junior Classic at The Pines features a total of 84 boys and girls ages 13 to 18. The field in the 54-hole event represents 17 states and Canada, with 40 Minnesotans competing in their home state this week.

The 17-year-old Miller struggled off the tee today, but still managed to drain five birdies en route to a score that would put him at even-par 144 for the tournament.

"I played a little bit too aggressively at times today," Miller said. My driver got me into more trouble than I hoped for. The key to this course is keeping the ball in play, and my game plan tomorrow will include hitting irons off the tee."

Chasing Miller in a three-way tie for second are Kyle Nathan of Winnetka, Ill., and Josh Persons and David Schultz, both of Fargo, N.D. The trio sits at 2-over-par 146. Kenny Palmer of Scottsdale Ariz., and Ryder Frerichs of Edina, Minn., are six strokes back of the lead in a tie for fifth at 6-over-par 150.

In the Girls Division, Amy Schmucker carded her second round of the tournament under 80 to jump out to a 1-stroke lead at 12-over-par 156.

"I was a little disappointed with my round today and I left a lot of shots out there," Schmucker said. "I was really happy with my iron game today though. Tomorrow I just need to hit the fairways and greens in regulation."

One stroke back of Schmucker in second place is Erica Dahl of Fargo, N.D., who tallied a two-day total of 13-over-par 157. Minnesota natives Brittany Willborg of Cologne and Agnes Kim of Woodbury are tied for third at 16-over-par 160.

Final-round action begins Thursday at Grand View Lodge, The Pines with tee-times beginning at 7:30 a.m. For more information on the AJGA Compaq Junior Classic at the Pines, contact tournament headquarters at (218) 963-0001.
