NA, WITTENBERG FIGHT OFF RAINS TO
LEAD AFTER TWO ROUNDS
Blasberg continues to lead Girls Division at 2-under-par
141
TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - Kevin Na of Diamond Bar,
Calif., and Casey Wittenberg of Memphis, Tenn., were
able to withstand over a three hour rain delay Wednesday
to lead after two rounds at the AJGA Rolex Tournament
of Champions at 6-under-par 137.
In the Girls Division, Erica Blasberg of Corona, Calif.,
has a one-stroke lead after shooting a 3-over-par 74
on the Copperhead Course at The Westin Innisbrook Resort.
The Rolex Tournament of Champions, conducted by the
American Junior Golf Association, features 170 players
from 33 states and five foreign countries, and includes
56 Polo Golf Junior All-Americans. The Rolex Tournament
of Champions is one of the AJGA's longest standing tournaments.
Na, who has made just one bogey in 36 holes, shot a
4-under-par 68 on the Island Course with 14 pars and
four birdies.
"I hit the ball well, not as good as yesterday,
though," Na said. "I made a lot of saves,
but could have made more birdie putts."
Wittenberg fired a 5-under-par 66 on the Copperhead
Course, only one stroke off his career best.
"The first two days is just about positioning,"
the 16-year-old said. "I played well after getting
off to a rough start yesterday."
Wittenberg hit 16 greens in regulation and played bogey-free
golf with 13 pars and five birdies for the day.
"I knew it was going to be a long day with the
rains, so I just wanted to stay patient and hit greens,"
Wittenberg added.
Chasing Na and Wittenberg is Raleigh, N.C., native Webb
Simpson. Simpson fired a 4-under-par 67 on the Copperhead
course for a two-day total of 139. Jeff Overton of Evansville,
Ind., and Jeff Bell of Plano, Texas, are tied at 2-under-par
141. Overton, an Indiana University signee, and Bell,
the AJGA all-time 54-hole scoring record holder, both
shot 1-over-par 72s on the Copperhead course.
In the Girls Division, Blasberg carded nines of 40-34
en route to a 2-under-par 141 two-day total.
Nicole Melton (71-71) of San Antonio, Texas, Whitney
Wade (72-70) of Glasgow, Ky., and Lisa Ferrero of Lodi,
Calif., are tied at 1-under-par 142, one stroke behind
Blasberg.
Ferrero, the reigning U.S. Girls Junior Champion, shot
the low round of the day with a 4-under-par 68 on Island
Course.
"I hit the ball pretty well today and started making
some putts," she said. "I hope to play the
best I can and just keep playing solid the rest of the
way."
Ferrero had 12 pars, five birdies and one bogey for
the round.
