MARTIN AND SATARAK TIE FOR GIRLS
LEAD AT 69
Park shoots 67 to top Boys Division
CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Allison Martin of Bakersfield, Calif., and Walailak Satarak of Paramount, Calif., both carded opening rounds of 3-under-par 69 Tuesday to tie for first atop the Girls Division leaderboard of the AJGA Legendary Headwear San Diego Junior. In the Boys Division, Lenny Park of Rowland Heights, Calif., fired a 5-under-par 67 to take a one-stroke lead.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the 84-player field includes juniors from seven states, including 68 Californians. Hosted by the par-72 Auld Course, this week's tournament features some of the brightest and best juniors in the country.
Martin, who helped lead the West squad to a victory in the AJGA Canon Cup last week, was able to attain her pre-round goal of having only red numbers next to her name on the scoreboard.
"My goal coming in was to shoot under-par on both sides," said the 15-year-old Martin. "I think that led to making good, aggressive swings at the ball instead of being timid. The added aggressiveness gave me a lot of confidence out there."
Martin was able to follow up her 34 on the front side with a 35 on the back nine, which was somewhat surprising to her.
"I actually thought I would shoot as well or better on the back side from playing here before," said Martin, who won earlier this year at the AJGA ClubCorp Junior at Mission Hills. "There are a lot of birdie opportunities on the back, so I knew if I made a mistake it wouldn't be a big deal. I just wanted to keep giving myself chances and hope that something would go in."
Satarak, who will be attending UC-Irvine in the fall, used a blazing front side total of 3-under-par 33 to pave the way to a share of the first-round lead with Martin.
Satarak birdied No. 1 and then bogeyed No. 3 before responding with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 4, 5 and 6.
"After I birdied the first hole, I knew it would be a good day," said Satarak, an admittedly slow-starter. "I didn't get too upset after I bogeyed number three, because I knew I could get it back at the short par five."
Rounding out the top three of the Girls Division is Jane Lee of Torrance, Calif., at 71.
In the Boys Division, Park a two-time AJGA winner, put together a 33 on his first nine and a 34 on his second nine to record the day's low round with a 67.
"I just tried to concentrate on every single shot," said Park. "Club selection was key for me today. I hit a lot of fairways and greens today and made a lot of mid-range putts."
Park parred his first four holes of the day before going out with three birdies on his final four holes for a 3-under-par 33.
Joining Park in the top five of the Boys Division is Taylor Wood of Laguna Niguel, Calif., at 68, and Scott MacDonald of Playa Del Rey, Calif., Tyler Ley of Santa Barbara, Calif., and David Yoon of Irvine, Calif., at 69.
Second-round action begins Wednesday, with tee times running from 6:45-8:42 a.m. off the No. 1 and 10 tees.
