REYNOLDS WRAPS UP EASTER WEEKEND
WITH WIN AT WHISPERING PINES
The Woodlands' Knoll earns first AJGA win in
Girls Division
TRINITY, Texas - A pair of Texans, Jay Reynolds
of Austin and Ashley Knoll of The Woodlands, captured
their respective divisions Sunday at the AJGA TaylorMade-adidas
Golf Junior at Whispering Pines. Reynolds carded a 3-under
69 in his final round to earn a two-shot win, while
Knoll recorded a three-stroke victory with her second
straight 70.
The 36-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Whispering Pines Golf Club, featured 156 players from 19 states and Canada. Past winners of this event include Bob May, Emilee Klein, Kellee Booth and Grace Park.
Reynolds, whose best previous AJGA finish was sixth at last year's Chrysler Junior Classic in Horseshoe Bay, Texas, used a strong back nine to propel himself to victory. After making the turn at even par on the day, the 18-year-old drained three birdies in the final nine holes en route to a 3-under 33 on the side.
"I knew it was going to be a dog fight," the University of New Mexico signee said. "The course was playing much tougher today."
Reynolds, who has been competing in AJGA events for over three years, was thrilled to finally accept the champion's trophy.
"I remember a time when I couldn't believe how good the tournament winners were," Reynolds said. "It feels great to know that now I'm on that level."
Tyler Leon of Dallas took second at 70-73--143. Three Texans shared third place at 144 - Evan O'Donnell of Palestine, reigning Polo Golf Boys Junior Player of the Year Matt Rosenfeld of Plano, and Ryan Baca of Richmond.
In the Girls Division, the 15-year-old Knoll captured her first AJGA crown after firing consecutive 2-under-par 70s. Knoll pulled away from fellow first-round leaders and playing partners Brittany Lang and Hwanhee Lee with two birdies on the back nine to earn the three-shot win. Following a birdie at the treacherous par-4 14th came a critical 15-foot par putt on No. 16 that helped Knoll build momentum.
"That putt gave me the confidence to hit the rest of the pressure putts down the stretch," said Knoll, a sophomore at The Woodlands High School. "Putting was definitely the key for me this weekend."
Knoll, who played with a gallery of family and friends cheering every shot, easily surpassed her pre-tournament goal of finishing in the top five and carding two rounds in the 70s.
"It was sort of a surprise to shoot under par because I had never done it at an AJGA event before," Knoll added. "It's a great feeling."
Lang, of McKinney, Texas, finished in second place at 70-73--143, and Lee, of Cerritos, Calif., rounded out the top three at 70-75--145. Stephanie Lue of Houston, the qualifier medalist playing in her first AJGA event, and Cindy Shin of McKinney, Texas, shared fourth place at 148.
